The British and Commonwealth Society of North America started in 1969, as a means for ex-patriot members of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth nations to obtain affordable air fares and specialty items from home. Since then, regular airlines began offering regular discounted tickets to the public, and British and Commonwealth items are available in stores and on line. However, good friendships and camaraderie blossomed among the group, and a desire to stay in touch with each other, celebrate British and Commonwealth events together, and promote these events to the public transformed the society into more of a social organization open to anyone with any interest in British and Commonwealth culture. The two major events are a holiday party in December and a celebration of Commonwealth Day in the Spring.
